What is the origin of the van Kuijk name? The oldest member of the family of which I found official documents (information about his mariage to Jannigje van Rooijen) is Willem van Kuijk who died in 1747. It is their church marriage certificate and their civil marriage registration. So no clue about the origin there.
Many family names are derived from toponyms (geographical names). These names indicating where people came from (names of origin), which area or estate they owned or managed, or which houses they owned or rented with or without association land.
In the latter group, the names also indicated where people lived. (After all, street numbers didn’t exist yet!) Origin names mainly go back to names of cities, villages and countries; address names on microtoponyms: names of houses, fields, watercourses, streets. The elite who named themselves after their possessions placed themselves, as it were, between these categories.
So the assumption can be made that somewhere far back an ancestor of me lived in the Dutch place Cuijk but there is no real evidence for this assumption. If anyone has any information that can help find the real origin of our family, please let me know.
